POSTRETIREMENT AND OTHER EMPLOYEE BENEFIT PLANS PENSION PLAN. The Company has a noncontributory defined benefit pension plan covering substantially all of its employees. Benefits are based on an employee's years of service and compensation during his or her last years of employment. The Company's policy is to fund the plan annually at a level which is fully deductible for federal income tax purposes and as necessary on an actuarial basis to provide assets sufficient to meet the benefits to be paid to plan members. In conformity with generally accepted accounting principles for a rate regulated enterprise, the Company has recorded regulatory adjustments to reflect, in net income, pension costs calculated under the actuarial method allowed for ratemaking. The cumulative difference between the net periodic pension cost calculated for financial reporting and ratemaking purposes has been included as a deferred charge or credit in the Consolidated Balance Sheet.
