The initial texturing shall be performed with a longitudinal burlap drag to produce a uniform textured surface. The burlap shall be kept in a clean and damp condition, free from tears and encrusted mortar. Burlap drag texturing shall be followed by placement of longitudinally tined grooves in the surface of a pavement while the concrete is plastic. The tining shall be done with a mechanical device producing a single row of tines. Each tine shall have a nominal width of 2mm to 3mm. The nominal spacing of the tines shall be 19 ± 3mm center-to-center. The nominal depth of tined groove in the plastic concrete shall be 4mm ± 1mm. Longitudinal tining shall be carried out using equipment having automated horizontal and vertical controls to ensure straight, uniform depth tined grooves. The texture geometry shall be the same for the entire length of the tining comb. A 75mm wide strip of pavement surface shall be protected from tining for the length of and centered about longitudinal joints. The tining operation shall be done at such time and manner that the desired surface texture will be achieved while minimizing displacement of the larger aggregate particles and before the surface permanently sets.
