Parent Engagement. CCA is deeply accountable to the students it serves because their parents make the ultimate act of faith: to bring their children to our doors and trust our school to deliver an outstanding education and fulfill our school mission. Close communication with our parents is essential. Together, we enter into a three-way partnership between parents, students, and our school to ensure a successful academic future for each child. To ensure the voice of these parents is well heard, CCA has created a Parents as Partners group with unlimited seats for membership. The chair and vice chair are elected or chosen for one-year terms. If desired by the group at large, parents will be elected to the Parents as Partners chair position by a vote of parents whose students are currently enrolled in the school. This group supports the mission of CCA in the following ways: • Coordinating parent volunteer efforts to support student recruitment, enrichment classes, and community gatherings • Gathering and reporting data about parent satisfaction • Reporting to the school director regarding their findings • Ensuring that school communications are sufficiently accessible to Spanish-speaking parents • Planning parent events that support the academic mission of the school, such as high school achievement nights, community-service events, student academic performance nights, and parenting seminars to support academic achievement In addition to this parent group, the school administration will establish frequent, formal communication with parents to support the school mission. Families will be welcomed to the school through an orientation that will review school policies in detail, celebrate student learning, and include the signing of parent-student-school contracts. Parents will attend conferences at the school two times annually, at which time assessment results and report cards will be reviewed in detail. Progress reports requiring a parent’s signature will be sent home at regular intervals between these conferences. Teachers will call the parents of their homeroom students on a regular basis to both report positive academic results and behaviors and deliver clear feedback when expectations are not met. A monthly school newsletter will communicate the effectiveness of the program and the excitement of the school to members of the community.
Parent Engagement. Parent Involvement Once School is in Session Urban schools must plan relationship building with their parents. Upon enrolling their children in DECA PREP, parents will sign a compact with the school indicating they will attend the parent academies tailored to their children’s grade levels. Attendance will be taken, and parents will be reminded of their commitment if they miss meetings. Building parent attendance into requirements provides leverage. Even more important is ensuring parents provide insistence, expectations, and support at home—especially at those times when academic rigor intensifies and students feel exceptionally challenged. DECA teacher-advisors communicate diligently with the families of their advisees and are available to them during after-school hours. Providing a familiar primary point of contact lessens parent’s fears of reaching out to the school. When parents are treated respectfully and held to their commitments, children see the primary adults in their lives as a unified force. DECA PREP will capitalize on the lessons learned at DECA about meaningful, respectful parent engagement. Parent cohort meetings will be held every four or five weeks during the school year. Transportation and babysitting will be offered. These meetings will be used to inform parents about DECA PREP news and to provide strategies for parents to help their children at home. Meetings are designed to be welcoming and informative and to air parent/guardian concerns. Informal surveys will be completed at each meeting to help gauge parent satisfaction with the school. Parents will receive weekly newsletters from the school to keep them informed. They will have contact information for all DECA PREP staff and can contact them as needed. Additionally, DECA PREP staff will be in frequent communication with parents/guardians. Each student has a teacher-advisor who is ultimately responsible for tracking the data for his/her students. Teacher- advisors will be the primary point of contact for parents. Parents will be contacted when their children enjoy success—and when there are problems. Although still in the design process, opportunities for parents to volunteer at the school will be plentiful. Volunteering may be a one-time event or an ongoing commitment. For example, they may help with a book or reading group, play math or science games, and/or assist with mailings and field trips. Besides informal surveys conducted at cohort meetings, the “My Voice” survey will be u...

Parent Engagement. The School works to involve families in their child’s school and education from the outset. For families new to the School, they can expect communication and invitations to participate in numerous events. These include recruitment events, open houses, Welcome to IDEA events, registration, summer engagement events, New Family and Student Orientation, and Back to School / Meet the Teacher events. These events are geared toward helping families transition into IDEA. Events emphasize IDEA’s academic model, culture, and the partnership between home and school. IDEA works to ensure that every family is onboarded, meaning they attend registration and a Welcome to IDEA session. While this event is highly recommended, it is not required of parents or students – children are not denied their seat, nor are offers rescinded, due to lack of attendance. Once students are enrolled at the School, distribution of information is paramount. IPS staff believe that it is crucial for students to have families who are well informed and engaged. IPS accomplishes this through several avenues, ensuring that staff can share information in a way that reaches the families Additional events are held on campus throughout the year to encourage parents and families to interact with campus leadership, including report-card pick-up night, parent walk-throughs, and volunteer programs. The School may also offer town-hall meetings throughout the year to get feedback from parents and families. In terms of active engagement in student learning, parents are asked to participate in several ways, if they are able. Parents are asked to support the daily and summer reading of younger students. They are also asked to check homework completion. Students typically receive a notebook where they write down their assignments and their accomplishments; parents are asked to sign this regularly, ensuring that students have shared their progress and are also being held accountable at home for homework and daily reading. Every parent has access to student learning data via an online portal, and direct communication is often conducted via cell phone, either through an app, text message, or a call.
