Paramedic Certification. As paramedic certification is a condition of employment, the Employer agrees to pay for the initial paramedic training. All hours involved in gaining initial certification shall be paid at the employee’s normal hourly rate. Once the employee has received such training and fails to receive such certification, the employee has eighteen (18) months to obtain certification at the employee’s own expense (i.e. no wages shall be paid for training nor shall the Employer pay for tuition and supplies). If the employee does not obtain certification within the eighteen (18) months after failure of initial training, such employee shall be subject to termination.

Paramedic Certification. All Fire Fighter Paramedics must maintain “University of Washington” Paramedic certification as outlined in WAC 246-976, as it may hereafter be amended. Additionally, Fire Fighter Paramedics must maintain all necessary “Continuing Medical Education” (CME) requirements consistent with the CME requirements approved by the King County Medical Director and the Director of Paramedic training, as updated (normally bi-annually).
Paramedic Certification. Members may request Department sponsorship to attend paramedic certification training. If the request is approved the course costs (tuition, fees, and books) will be provided in advance. In an effort to create the least operational impact to the Department, the members are expected to attend their classes at one facility and schedule their attendance to the clinicals, where possible, off duty. Any exception to scheduling attendance to training off duty must be approved by the Fire Chief or designee. Prior to receiving sponsorship, the member shall enter into an agreement to reimburse the City if the member leaves employment within four (4) years of becoming a solo-paramedic with the Department or if they are unsuccessful in achieving solo-paramedic status with the Department. Reimbursement will be a prorated amount reflective of the cost of the program they attended. Members sponsored by the Department as outlined above shall maintain their solo-paramedic status with the Department for the same four (4) year period. Exceptions to this provision are at the sole and complete discretion of the Fire Chief.

Paramedic Certification. Fire Captains and Engineers are not eligible for the Paramedic compensation. Fire Captains, Engineers and Firefighter-Paramedics are eligible for an A.C.L.S. incentive equal to 2.5% of their base hourly pay rate in lieu of the E.M.T. incentive (applicable only to those employees who have completed their first year of full-time service). All fees and continuing education expenses associated with license maintenance will be reimbursed by the City upon verification of completion of the required training.

Paramedic Certification. Unit members who are Florida certified paramedics as of the signing of this contract and perform as either paramedics or supervise paramedics are a Fire Medic 2 in accordance to the applicable pay plan that is in effect so long as the certification remains active. Unit members who become Florida certified paramedics after the signing of this contract and perform as either paramedics or supervise paramedics will be Fire Medic 1’s in accordance to the applicable pay plan that is in effect so long as the certification remains active. These unit members who become Fire Medic 1’s are required to become Fire Medic 2’s within one (1) year of certification within guidelines established by the Fire Chief and the Assistant Fire Chief of EMS for achieving Solo status as a District Chief or Captain. If a unit member is required by the Fire Chief to re-solo, as outlined under the applicable SOP, due to returning from approved leave, said unit member will have sixty (60) days to secure their re-solo status without loss of incentive. The re-solo process applied to the unit members covered by this contract shall be deemed by the Fire Chief as appropriate for the position of a supervisor of paramedics and should focus on any changes that may have occurred involving protocols, policies, procedures implemented and educational programs provided and missed during the covered absence.
Paramedic Certification. The parties agree and understand that any employee hired after January 1, 2013 must enroll in a certified Paramedic program within five (5) years of hire and will be responsible for all costs associated with obtaining such certification and the employee will not be permitted to accumulate any compensatory time for any time spent towards paramedic certification Employees will be allowed to attend class on their duty day, but are subject to call back as needed. Anyone who refuses or is unable to maintain paramedic certification for any non-medical reason or who is refused testing privileges by the certifying authority will be terminated.
Paramedic Certification. If an employee wishes to pursue a paramedic certification, and wishes the employer to assume the cost burden of such course, a request for employer payment of tuition involved will be made in writing not less that fifteen (15) days prior to the first day upon which such course begins. If approved by the Fire Chief or his designee, the employer will pay the cost of the tuition, books, and other required materials involved. The employer shall forgive such debt to the employee at the rate of fifty percent (50%) per each full year of employment after successful completion of state licensure and the department medical director’s consent to perform as a paramedic. It is also understood that employee will be awarded 120 hours of compensation time upon successful completion of licensure. If an employee terminates employment prior to the full satisfaction of such debt, such employee shall be liable to the employer to the extent of any outstanding and unforgiven costs. The parties specifically agree that any unpaid costs may be deducted from any wages or other compensations due and owing employee at the time of such termination.
