From the moment our new grade 6 students enter our learning community, to when our grade 12 students are ready to leave, it is through connection that we learn our students’ stories. ASIA currently has a 100% Indigenous grad rate and we feel this is due, in part, to the opportunity we have to get to know our students during both their middle and secondary time with us. ASIA utilizes weekly care meetings specifically to better understand and support our Indigenous and vulnerable youth. These meetings include our Indigenous support worker, learning services staff, councillor, youth care worker, and administrators and through collaboration seek to gain a more complete picture of the students in our care, their needs, and how to address them. We also encourage our Indigenous students to look at career, trades, and post secondary education through planning with our ISW and councillor. ASIA has a support room called the R and R, which stands for reset and return. It is a quiet, healthy place to escape to when students are feeling overwhelmed or anxious. This gathering place is also home to our Youth Support Worker’s office. Indigenous students are encouraged to use this space for social/emotional/academic support on a drop-in basis as needed.
