Operations Research. The reproductive health field has long had an interest in studying men’s involvement to determine if a focus on men can increase contraceptive use and other positive reproductive health behaviors. This CSP will use men’s groups to discuss a variety of health issues, particularly relating to the three project interventions, and explore the question: Will educating and mobilizing men around maternal and child health issues improve household level behavior change? The project will conduct this study within the CHS catchment area, not the area outside as other services are not comparable. The partners will select communities for implementing men’s groups and compare their behavior change with other communities just using Care Groups and other strategies. The project will not compare communities outside of the project area due to costs of extra surveys. Chikankata Health Services and the CCSP, specifically, is also working closely with Boston University and the Ministry of Health on the Zambia Integrated Management of Malaria and Pneumonia Study, which will examine CHW assessment of malaria and pneumonia in children under five, the effects of integrated management on health of children, CHW use of Coartem and amoxicillin, and the cost effectiveness of community-based versus facility-based management.
Operations Research. As part of monitoring and evaluation function, the project will integrate operations research (OR) in its design to obtain information critical to enhance behavior change. During CIMCI phase I, Africare studied and quantified the immediate effect of CIMCI on facility utilization, revealing an increase of 97%. CIMCI-Plus extension provides an excellent opportunity to monitor this effect over time, for projecting facility and other needs. CIMCI-Plus will look at qualitative factors influencing care- seeking patterns for dangerous practices such as millet and tooth extraction, from client and traditional healer perspectives, to provide information for development of BCC strategies to address these practices. PRA will be a key methodology in the studies that will be undertaken to gather qualitative data
Operations Research. Carrying out of research on effective production techniques for high quality salt from limited pond areas and improvement of storage conditions to reduce the decline of iodine levels in salt, including provision of technical assistance.
Operations Research. Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) The IAP study, in collaboration with Loughborough University (UK) and Winrock International (US), aims to measure the extent of hazardous indoor air pollution in the poorest households and introduce behavior change methods including the use of special ovens to reduce the communities’ exposure to IAP. The study has adopted two primary approaches, social marketing for the stoves and a Behavior Change Communications (BCC) campaign to raise knowledge and awareness; and reduce harmful practices. Concern is responsible for the BCC component. The following are the accomplishments to date: - Cabinet Members and WHCs in all seven municipalities have been oriented regarding the study and any changes necessary in their annual plans due to study related activities have been incorporated. - A training module and communication tools have been developed for CHVs who have been adopted as the primary channel of communication with the households in the study. - Planning is under way for a message development workshop and field testing of communication tools for adolescents, recruited to disseminate messages to households.
