Download date: 02. Jun. 2023 THE REDEMPTION OF PHYSICAL REALITY: FILMS FROM THE BERLIN SCHOOL THROUGH THE LENS OF XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX’X MATERIAL AESTHETICS Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx PhD in German Studies Abstract This thesis explores the contemporaneity of Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxx’x conception of cinema as outlined in his book Theory of Film: The Redemption of Physical Reality, first published in 1960, and defined by Xxxxxxxx as a study of “material aesthetics.” Though the book is often seen solely as a contribution, albeit a significant one, to so-called classical film theory, in this study I want to make the case for the ongoing relevance of Xxxxxxxx’s notion of the medium, presenting ways of making his approach productive for the examination of contemporary cinema. As case studies, I have chosen films associated with the Berlin School, a group of contemporary German filmmakers whose material realism strikes me as ideally suited for discussions in relation to Xxxxxxxx’s material aesthetics. This is what I aim to do in this study: bringing together Xxxxxxxx’s idea of cinema’s redemptive potential for re-experiences of the material world with contemporary realist filmmaking. However, I do not consider Theory of Film a dogmatic manual of cinematic realism but an open text that raises significant issues about the medium’s relationship with reality. Thus, rather than aiming to prove Xxxxxxxx’s film theory right or wrong, I want to use the book as a toolbox to think about contemporary cinema and the current possibilities for experiences of reality. In so doing, this study, I hope, will help to open up a discussion on the relevance of Xxxxxxxx’s Theory of Film for current realist approaches not only in the Berlin School films that are my object, but in world cinema. Peacemakers and Partisans Xxxxxxx and Political Reform in England 1213-1268 Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx Xxxxxx PhD thesis King’s College London 2012 This thesis examines the role of bishops in political reform and rebellion in England, beginning with the return from exile in 1213 of Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxx (archbishop of Canterbury 1207-26) and ending with the suspension in 1266 of five bishops for their involvement with the Montfortian revolution. Xxxxxxx and his successor Xxxxxx xx Xxxxxxxx (archbishop of Canterbury 1233-40) created a model for episcopal involvement in the affairs of the realm, especially during times of discord between king and barons. Prioritising the peace of the kingdom, they maintained their loyalty to the king as well as his subjects so that they were empowered and incentivised to act as peacemakers. This obligation was developed by Xxxxxxx’x biblical understanding of the clerical duty to ensure good government. When illegal or destructive royal policies caused baronial discontent that threatened civil peace, the bishops could step in to reform the king’s behaviour. Although they threatened ecclesiastical censure, Xxxxxxx and Xxxxxx never attacked the foundations of royal power. In contrast, the Montfortian bishops renounced their loyalty to the king. As partisan Montfortians, they were no longer qualified to act as peacemakers. Members of a regime that appropriated the bases of royal power and ruled in the king’s name, they advocated measures that their predecessors would have considered illicit and dangerous. The intellectual conflict created by this rupture is reflected in the actions and justificatory arguments of the Montfortian bishops, who had to construct their case from scratch in the crucible of political crisis. Their story provides an ideal-type for the study of political thought: exothermic ideology. Not the cause but the consequence of events on the ground, their arguments are not coherent as political theory but reveal the effect on the production of ideas exer...

Download date: 24. Apr. 2021 Holographic F-theory Xxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx Department of Mathematics, King’s College London, The Strand, London WC2R 2LS, United Kingdom Thesis supervisor: Xxxx. Xxxxx Xxxxxxxx A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics October 2018 Abstract‌ The central theme of this thesis is Type IIB supergravity solutions and their field theory duals. The uniqueness of our set up is the inclusion of an AdS factor in the geometry. In traditional F-theory compactifications the non-compact part of spacetime is Minkowski space, by including an AdS factor we may appeal to the AdS/CFT correspondence and probe the dual field theories from the gravity side. In the first part of this thesis we will be interested in AdS3 solutions with F- theoretic interpretations. We find the general conditions for the existence of a su- persymmetric solution with (0, 2) supersymmetry. This is determined by the choice of a 6d K¨xxxxx base satisfying a master equation. One may give this equation an F-theoretic interpretation by the inclusion of an auxiliary elliptic fibration which models the varying axio-dilaton as in canonical F-theory compactifications. The unique family of (0, 4) solutions are holographically dual to D3-branes wrapped on curves inside a Calabi–Yau three-fold and correspond to self-dual strings in the 6d N = (0, 1) theory obtained from F-theory on the aforementioned Calabi–Yau threefold. The dual field theory to this set up has been discussed in the literature, but only in the abelian (N = 1) case. The power of the AdS/CFT correspondence allows us to make predictions for N > 1 which are otherwise inaccessible from the field theory side with current technology. We compute the holographic central charges and show that these agree with the field theory and with the anomalies of self-dual strings in 6d. We complement our analysis with a discussion of the dual M-theory solutions and a comparison of the central charges. We supplement ...

Download date: 04. Jun. 2023 Between History and Fiction The Destabilisation of Masculinist History in Contemporary Algerian Women's Fiction Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx Xxxx'x College London Department of French Submitted for the degree of Doctor Of Philosophy in September 2014 Masculinist constructions of Algerian history relegate women to symbolic roles. The texts by Algerian women writers studied in my thesis all use fiction to express agency and create empowerment through – or in spite of – these symbolic positions. My thesis is concerned with how fiction highlights and negotiates various manifestations of the tension created when authors engage with masculinist historical discourses by casting women in – and so perhaps validating – the roles that they are assigned within these same discourses. Chapter one defines what I am terming 'masculinist history' by analysing historical documents. Chapter two examines how, in Xxxxx Xxxxxx'x La Femme sans sépulture, Xxxxx Xxxxxxxx's Xx Xxxxx Fille et la Mère, and Xxxxxx Xxx'x Entendez-vous dans les montagnes..., real- life freedom-fighters are fictionalised in a way that negotiates the tension between filling in the blanks of history and upholding discourses of martyrdom. The third chapter explores the more recent violence in Algeria, how Xxx'x Puisque mon cœur est mort and Xxxxxxxx's Le Châtiment des hypocrites employ fiction to create sites of mourning that are otherwise unavailable because of the amnesty for crimes committed during this period – although the violent conclusions of the texts imply the limitations of fiction in this respect. Chapter four moves away from representations of women caught up in extraordinary circumstances and focuses on the everyday. This chapter investigates the figuration of the domestic as a site of female resistance to both patriarchal and colonial oppression – a figuration that simultaneously risks reinforcing women's symbolic position as bastions of tradition – in Djebar's Nulle part dans la maison de mon père ...
