National Collaborative Outreach. Programme Falmouth University is working in partnership with all other regional universities and HE providers through the National Collaborative Outreach Programme. Falmouth University is a partner in the Next Steps South West consortium led by Plymouth University, covering target wards in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. This collaboration builds on the success of the former regional NNCO networks: the Devon Collaborative Outreach Network and Next Steps Cornwall. Working within the targeted remit of the NCOP initiative, this programme focuses on pupils in Years 9-13, identified as medium or high achievers, with low HE aspiration, and domiciled within nominated postcodes (HEFCE POLAR3 and Gaps Analysis). A diverse range of outreach projects will be designed and delivered collaboratively by partners in the consortium, with robust evaluation of impact throughout. The funding for these projects will continue to sit outside the University’s Access Agreement, but their presence within the university directly sits within the broad access and outreach “offer” and contributes to a rich evidence base which can be used to track student access, success and progression throughout the life-cycle. The Next Steps South West provision for target groups complements the broader outreach work to promote higher education to the wider range of WP target groups such as other age groups or those with other indicators of disadvantage. Across the consortium, other benefits of this complementary programme are being maximised to add momentum and efficiency to Widening Participation Access programmes. Through sharing best practice, avoiding duplication, enabling specialisation from a wider pool of providers, allowing a broader representation of partners at a larger number of events, and pooling resources, partners are able to make best use of resources for targeting under- represented groups in HE. The Next Steps NCOP consortium includes West Somerset, a Government ‘opportunity area’, and Falmouth University will work with partner organisations from West Somerset to explore the potential for further relevant collaborative partnerships with education providers, employers and third sector organisations in the opportunity area.
National Collaborative Outreach. Programme We are the lead institution for the Essex National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP). This project, Make Happen, is delivered by the Essex Collaborative Outreach Network and is a continuation of the National Network for Collaborative Outreach, although the aims and objectives have been brought in line with the new programme. This HEFCE-funded programme will work with students from specific disadvantaged areas of Essex to increase the proportion of students progressing to higher education from those areas. A steering group made up of higher and further education partners as well as schools, colleges, charities and the three local authorities in Essex direct the work of the project. Activity focuses around a long-term progressive programme alongside one-off projects. Monitoring and evaluation of the programme will also be used to inform our partners about effective practice when working with young people. The network is currently funded until December 2018, although it is anticipated that funding will continue until December 2020. The Make Happen team is primarily based within our outreach team with some staff based and working collaboratively with partners across the county. We work proactively to ensure that activities avoid duplication and complement other activities happening within individual outreach teams.
National Collaborative Outreach. Programme A successful bid for HEFCE funding for the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP)31 has created an opportunity to develop additional outreach opportunities. Alongside work delivered through our access agreement, we will also deliver the NCOP for the Humber region. The recruitment of a new team of twelve staff to deliver NCOP work, will ensure that we have the capacity to guarantee NCOP activities provide additionality and complementarity to the activities and outreach work delivered under the access agreement. The NCOP team manager will report directly to the Head of Access, Funding and Support, who will have responsibility for ensuring the NCOP team works closely with the Access, Funding and Support Office and the Schools and Colleges Liaison Service and for ensuring coordination and cohesion across the different strands of our outreach work. Where there are areas of potential overlap, we may look to match fund projects (or offer/ deliver additional activities as appropriate) from the different funding streams as appropriate (based on the nature of activity and target cohort of pupils). This is to streamline the offer to schools, who may not perceive the difference between the areas of funding or have limited time in which to engage. As ever, our work under the access agreement will focus on the holistic student journey – from primary school to employment. We will continue to deliver to this broad base of target pupils under our access agreement to ensure that the narrow focus of the NCOP does not eclipse the broader outreach we have been delivering and plan to continue to develop. A 30 The University of Hull in conjunction with AccessHE has developed a Chemistry GCSE/ A level Chemistry Revision MOOC. ‘Molcraft’ which is currently being trailed in London and Hull. 31 National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP) xxxx://xxx.xxxxx.xx.xx/sas/ncop/ systematic approach to the use of HEFCE and institutional contextual data will allow the University to maximise both Access Agreement and NCOP funding.
National Collaborative Outreach. Programme (NCOP) – the targets and monitoring mechanisms will be different for each institution in the network as they review their own internal capability. For Southampton Solent University, we intend to track each individual participant who initially engages in an outreach activity, but extend this to track their student journey if they commence their studies with us. This will start to build a five year study in student performance that can be used to evaluate outreach activities, as well as track progression and success. HIGHER EDUCATION ACCESS TRACKER
