Do not provide a bond breaker in the longitudinal joint of Type C patches. Provide tiebars in all Type C patches. For all patch types, saw cut the longitudinal joint 1/4 inch wide and 1 inch deep. Longitudinal Joints. Defects and omissions as referenced in Division 1, Section 4, Subsection 49.0 of the Department's Standard Specification shall include construction related defects, at or adjacent to the longitudinal joint, such as ravelling, segregation, de-bonding, pot holing or cracking. In the event that defect(s) are observed at or near the longitudinal joint, within the Extended Warranty period, the Engineer will determine whether the defects are construction related. The Contractor shall repair at their own expense, all construction related defects as identified by the Engineer. Cracks up to 20mm wide shall be filled and sealed (no routing is required) in accordance with Division 4, Section 11 - Crack Filling and Crack Sealing (EPWS) of the Department's Standard Specification. Defects that cannot be repaired by crack filling and sealing shall be cold planed to a width of approximately 600mm and to the same depth of the surface course. Emulsified asphalt tack shall be applied to all joints and the underlying asphalt concrete. Asphalt concrete removed by cold planing shall be replaced with the equivalent type of asphalt concrete material according to the Department's Standard Specification, Division 4 Section 4 - Asphalt Concrete Hot Mixed - Hot Placed. The hot mix asphalt shall be compacted to 92.5% of the Maximum Theoretical Density (per ASTM D 3202) using both a rubber tired roller to obtain maximum compaction and a steel drum roller to obtain smoothness. Combination rollers are acceptable. The perimeter of the repaired area shall be sealed with a rubberized joint sealing material as specified in Division 4 Section 11.

Longitudinal Joints. For all layers of pavement except the leveling course, place each layer so that longitudinal construction joints are offset 6 to 12 inches laterally between successive layers. Do not construct longitudinal joints in the wheel paths. The Engineer may waive these requirements where offsetting is not feasible due to the sequence of construction.
Longitudinal Joints. Construct well bonded and sealed longitudinal joints to obtain maximum compaction at the joint. If deemed necessary by the Engineer to properly seal the joint, apply a light coat of asphalt emulsion or asphalt binder to the exposed edge before the joint is made. Offset the longitudinal joint in successive courses by 6 to 12 inches. Comply with traffic lane edges for the width of the surface of top course placement.
Longitudinal Joints. Plan longitudinal joints to coincide with changes in cross-slope, regardless of the overlap width. Provide a minimum longitudinal overlap of six (6) inches. No payment will be paid for overlap. Do not apply foamed asphalt on previously placed FDR when overlap occurs. Insure the overlap is compacted to achieve minimum density per the Contract. Care shall be taken to ensure longitudinal joints are not located within wheel-path.
Longitudinal Joints. All longitudinal joints shall be cleaned free from dust and coated before placing the HMA with a uniform application of a polymerized joint adhesive selected from the Department’s approved products list. The polymerized joint adhesive material shall be applied at a slow rate to ensure an even coating thickness of an eighth of an inch over the entire joint face. For echelon paving the longitudinal joints need not be treated with the polymerized joint adhesive. The paving shall be done with the spring loaded end plates of the paver in the “down” position. When constructing the first lane, care shall be exercised in rolling so as not to displace the line and grade of the edges of the HMA. The longitudinal joint in one layer shall offset that in the layer immediately below by approximately 6 inches. The joint in the surface course shall be offset from the lane lines by 6 inches except for the centerline of a roadway in which the joint shall fall between the double yellow traffic stripe. Paving, compaction and the supply of material shall proceed at a uniform rate with minimal or no stopping. If a single paver does not spread the HMA material the entire width of the roadway, two pavers shall be used provided that the rate of production of HMA material can be maintained. The second unit shall follow within 300 feet of the first unit in echelon, so as not to permit cooling of the longitudinal joint between the two lanes. If echelon paving is to be utilized, the distance that the screed and end gate of the trailing paver shall extend over the uncompacted HMA layer behind the first paver shall be 1 inch or less. The inside end gate of the second paver must be set at the same level as the bottom of the screed plate of the first paver. Raking of the joint is not needed. A wedge joint shall be constructed when traffic is to be maintained and lift thickness is greater than 21/4 inches. A vertical edge joint will be permitted for lift thickness 21/4 inches or less when traffic has to be maintained. For lift thickness greater than 21/4 inches and traffic is not required to be maintained, a vertical edge shall be utilized.
