Monitoring Heat Stress These procedures should be considered when the ambient air temperature exceeds 70oF, the relative humidity is high (>50 percent), or when workers exhibit symptoms of heat stress. The heart rate (HR) should be measured by the radial pulse for 30 seconds, as early as possible in the resting period. The HR at the beginning of the rest period should not exceed 100 beats/minute, or 20 beats/minute above resting pulse. If the HR is higher, the next work period should be shortened by 33 percent, while the length of the rest period stays the same. If the pulse rate still exceeds 100 beats/minute at the beginning of the next rest period, the work cycle should be further shortened by 33 percent. The procedure is continued until the rate is maintained below 100 beats/minute, or 20 beats/minute above resting pulse.
