GHANA. The situation in Ghana concerning pests in agriculture is typical for tropical countries. Arthropod pests prevail in the dry season and diseases prevail in the wet season (Xxxxxx 2001) and many OC insecticides such as DDT, aldrin, dieldrin and endosulfan have been used in Ghana for more than three decades. Since the 1990s, Ghana has seen growing interest and increasing investment in agriculture in order to increase its production of food. This has led to an increased use of pesticides to control and eradicate agricultural pests. Most of these pesticides are non-specific and can therefore affect both target and non-target organisms (Xxxxxx 2003). A study performed in 1994 on 30 organised farms and 110 kraals distributed throughout 10 regions of Ghana discovered that 20 different pesticides were used. A total of 45 per cent of these pesticides were OPs, 30 per cent pyrethroids, 15 per cent carbamates and 10 per cent were OCs. The OC lindane was the pesticide most widely distributed and used by 35 per cent of all farmers and 85 per cent of all herdsmen. The favourite method of application was by hand dressing and post application intervals for consumption of meat or milk were not observed. The results of a study in 1997 showed that the knowledge of farm workers of personal protective measures was poor and the use of personal protective equipment was minimal. Another study in 1997 measured lindane and endosulfan in river water and fish tissues collected from rivers flowing through intense cocoa producing areas. It revealed that water and fish samples from 1995 contained both lindane and endosulfan, but also to a lesser extent DDT and other OCs. Pesticide concentration in all the fish varied by species and month of sampling but was generally higher for lindane and much higher for endosufane (Xxxxxxxxxx 2003 a). In 1996 price subsidies for pesticides were removed. With the process of intensification improved varieties of food crops such as maize, cowpea, groundnut, and sorghum were promoted. The improved cowpea varieties in particular tend to mature faster and have higher yields than local varieties. But the improved varieties are far more susceptible to pests in the field and later in storage and require high investments to manage the pests. Intensification and cotton programmes expanded the use of pesticides. Almost all smallholders use pesticides and herbicides instead of manual weeding (Xxxxxxxxxx 2003 a). Generally it can be said that the more a crop is cul...
GHANA. Ghana is a country of 238,537 square kilometres located in West Africa. It is bordered to the west by Cote d’Ivoire, to the east by Togo, to the north by Burkina Faso and to the south by the Gulf of Guinea. A tropical rain forest belt, broken by heavily forested hills and many streams and rivers, extends northward from the shore, near the frontier with Côte d'Ivoire. This area, known as the "Xxxxxxx," produces most of the country's cocoa, minerals, and timber. The northern parts of Ghana are mostly flat savannah, with the primary form of vegetation being xxxx and grasses. The climate is generally tropical. The eastern coastal belt is warm and comparatively dry; the southwest corner hot and humid; and the north hot and dry. There are two distinct rainy seasons in the south: May-June and August- September, while in the north, there is only one rainy season. Agriculture employs 55% of the people. The nation large depends on rain fed agriculture which is also affected by climate variability. Agriculture contributes 38% of Ghana’s GDP. According to the 2000 Population and Housing Census, Ghana’s population was at about 18,412,247, of which about 49.5% are males and the remaining 50.5% females. The Xxxxxxx Region is the most populous region in Ghana, accounting for about 3,187,607 (17.3%) followed by the Greater Accra Region with 2,909,643 (15.8%). The Upper East and Upper West Regions in Northern Ghana have the lowest, each with a population of less than a million. Current projections put Ghana’s population at about 23,951,519. The population is very young for about 39.2% were children up to 14 years. The youth aged between 15 and 34 accounts for about 33.2% while adults (between 35 and 64) account for 11.3%. The aged (65+) constitute about 2.1%. This population structure translates into a dependency ratio of about 41.3%. The dependency ratio of about 41.3% means there are about 9 dependents for every 10 working people in Ghana. Ghana like all developing countries seeks to attain a middle income status by 2015. Ghana’s economy continues to revolve around subsistence agriculture, which accounts for 38% of GDP (2008) and employs about 55% (based on GLSS V) of the workforce, mainly small landholders. However, Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance. The economy has seen improvements over the last decade, especially since 2001. Consequently GDP growth, which averaged about 4.7% over the period between 1995 and 2005, incre...
