Family Death Leave. A regular employee is entitled to up to three (3) days of paid leave when needed due to the death of an immediate family member. In addition, the employee may take up to two (2) additional days of leave charged to annual leave, sick leave, or compensatory time off, when needed due to the death. For purposes of this paragraph, immediate family includes child, step child, spouse, parent, step parent, grandparent, grandchildren, brother, sister, step-brother or step sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, or any child or close relative who resided with the employee at the time of death. The employee shall give notice to his/her immediate supervisor prior to taking such leave. Part-time employees shall receive leave on a pro-rata basis based on the percent of full-time regularly worked.‌

Family Death Leave. 1. Within ten (10) consecutive calendar days beyond the date of death of a relative, each teacher shall be entitled to be absent no more than the number of days as follows:
Family Death Leave. In the case of death in a teacher's immediate family, the teacher is entitled to be absent without loss of compensation per event for a period extending not more than five (5) consecutive school days beyond such death, for the purposes of attending the last burial rites and attending to the personal matters of the immediate family member, provided, however, that said burial rites occur while said teacher is performing duties as assigned by the Board under a valid teacher's contract, and that said burial rites do not occur during the time when said teacher is absent from assigned duties due to vacation, or leaves of absence, or sick leaves, or leaves for personal business, which may have been previously granted or approved by the Board. (School holidays falling in this period shall be counted as school days.) "Family" is interpreted as including only parent, brother, sister, child (including miscarriages), stepchildren, spouse, grandparent or grandchildren, any other relative who at the time of death was living as a member of the teacher's household, a person for who the teacher holds power of attorney, or Executor of Estate. The Superintendent shall consider special relationships not covered in the above but falling within its intent. In the event that a teacher must settle an estate or attend to matters directly related to the death much later after the event, the teacher may arrange with the Superintendent to not use the death leave consecutively. In the case of death of a mother-in-law, father-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sister in-law, or brother-in-law, the teacher is entitled to be absent up to three (3) days without loss of compensation per event, provided, however, that the conditions enumerated above in this paragraph E shall apply. One leave day shall be granted per event for funerals in case of the death of other family members or close friends. The leaves in this paragraph may be taken in half-day increments.
Family Death Leave. A permanent employee shall be granted leave with pay for a death in the employee's family. As soon as it is practical, the employee shall notify the first level of Supervisor outside the bargaining unit of the need for family death leave. For the purpose of this section, employee's family is determined as including mother, father, spouse, anyone living in a spousal relationship, sister, brother, son, daughter, grandparent, grandchild, legal xxxx, mother-in-law, and father-in-law. For relatives residing within 500 miles of the employee's home, up to 3 days may be granted. When the employee is required to travel over 500 miles from his/her home in connection with the death of the family member, up to 5 days may be granted. Requests for such leave shall be made in writing and must be approved by the first level of supervision outside of the bargaining unit. An employee may use up to 5 days of sick leave in addition to family death leave.
Family Death Leave. With the approval of the supervisor, an employee may reschedule work to permit time to attend the funeral of a deceased family member according to the following criteria. If the employee is scheduled to work at least 3 days or more during the week in question, the employee may reschedule up to 2 work days. An employee who works two days or less in a given week, may reschedule one work day. An employee may be requested to furnish satisfactory verification for use of family death leave. For purposes of this provision, immediate family shall be defined as mother, father, step parent, husband, wife, son, daughter, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, and domestic partners of Unit employees who have filed a Declaration of Domestic Partnership, in accordance with established City policy, and parents and children of the domestic partner.

If memorial services are held within 500 miles from the home, up to 3 days may be granted. For services held more than 500 miles from the employee's home, up to 5 days may be granted. Request for such leave, with proof of relationship to the deceased, shall be made in writing and must be approved by the Assistant General Manager for Public Safety, or designee.
