Extended Leave. Extended leaves of absence of at least three (3) but not more than five (5) years may be granted in accordance with Minnesota law. Notwithstanding any other provision of this Agreement, retention and accrual of all rights and benefits for ASF Members on extended leave shall be governed by Minnesota Statute Section 136F.43.

Extended Leave. Employees on extended sick leave are responsible for notifying the Department of their primary location and expected return date. An extended sick leave is when an employee is off work for maternity/paternity leave, recovery from a disabling illness or injury or other recognized use of sick leave for more than five (5) days as prescribed by medical authority.
Extended Leave. Upon exhaustion of all sick leave accumulations, an employee disabled by illness, injury or pregnancy, substantiated by proper medical evidence, may be granted by the Sheriff an unpaid leave of absence up to one (1) year. An employee medically able to return to work would bump back into the bargaining unit based upon his/her seniority and his/her ability to perform, as determined by the Sheriff. Accrual of all benefits and seniority shall cease during this period.

The employee shall notify the District in writing of his/her intention to return by May 1st. Failure to meet the May 1st deadline will be considered a resignation. Upon return fro such leave, the professional employee shall be guaranteed the same position held prior to the commencement of the leave. All rights of tenure, retirements, accrued sick leave, salary increments and other benefits provided herein shall be preserved and available to the professional employee upon his/her return to the District.
Extended Leave. An Employee may be granted extended leave without pay or benefits, subject to approval of the Board, for health; illness of spouse, child or parent; maternity; paternity; adoption; study; campaigning for or serving in public office; or professional activities. Such leaves are subject to the provisions of the Board policy on extended leaves. An Employee will be allowed to take an unpaid leave of absence for military service in accordance with the employee handbook.

Extended Leave. The Board has developed a policy to allow members to take extended leaves of absence of up to 1 year. These leaves are self-funded by members receiving 4 years' salary over a 5-year period or 3 years' salary over a 4-year period. Details of the policy are available from Staff Services.
