Effect of Absence. (a) (i) It is understood that during an approved unpaid absence not exceeding thirty (30) continuous days or any approved absence paid by the Hospital, both seniority and service will accrue. During an unpaid absence exceeding thirty (30) continuous calendar days, credit for service for purposes of salary increments, vacation, sick leave, or any other benefit under any provision of the Collective Agreement or elsewhere, shall be suspended; the benefits concerned appropriately reduced on a pro rata basis and the employee's anniversary date adjusted accordingly. In addition, the employee will become responsible for full payment of subsidized employee benefits in which he is participating for the period of the absence. The employee may arrange with the Hospital to prepay the full premium of any applicable subsidized benefits in which he is participating during the period of leave in excess of thirty (30) continuous days to ensure continuing coverage. It is further understood that during such absence, credit for seniority shall be suspended and not accrue during the period of absence. Notwithstanding this provision, seniority shall accrue if an employee’s absence is due to disability resulting in WSIB benefits or LTD benefits including the period of the disability program covered by Employment Insurance.

Effect of Absence. It is understood that during an approved unpaid absence not exceeding thirty continuous days or any approved absence paid by the Hospital, both sen- iority and service will accrue. During an unpaid absence exceeding thirty contin- uous calendar days, credit for service for purposes of salary increment, vacation, sick leave, or any other benefits under any provisions of the Collective Agree- ment or elsewhere, shall be suspended for the period of the absence in excess thirty continuous calendar days, the benefits concerned appropriately reduced on a pro rata basis and the employee's anni- versary date adjusted accordingly. In addition, the employee will become responsible for full payment of subsidized employee benefits in which is part- icipating for the period of the absence, except that the Hospital will continue to pay its share of the premiums for up to eighteen months while an employee is in receipt of benefits. Effective April the Hospital will continue to pay its share of the premiums for the initial seventeen weeks from the commencement of the leave while an employee is on maternity or adoption leave. April service shall accrue for the initial seventeen weeks from the commencement of the leave if an employee is on maternity or adoption leave. Notwithstanding this provision, service shall accrue for a period of fifteen weeks if an employee's absence is due to a disability resulting in benefits. It is further understood that during such unpaid absence, credit for seniority for purposes of promo- demotion, transfer or lay - off shall be suspended and not accrue during the period of absence. Notwith- standing t h i s provision seniority shall accrue during maternity or adoption leave, or for a period of eigh - teen months i f an employee's absence is due t o a disability resulting i n benefits, or for a period of one year i f an employee's absence is due t o an illness.
Effect of Absence. (a) Except as otherwise provided under the pregnancy leave and parental leave provisions of this Collective Agreement, during an unpaid absence exceeding thirty (30) continuous calendar days, credit for service for the absence in excess of thirty (30) continuous calendar days, for purposes of salary increment, vacation, sick leave or any other benefit under any provision of the Collective Agreement or elsewhere, shall be suspended; the benefits concerned appropriately reduced on a pro rata basis and the Employee's service date adjusted accordingly for the entire period of the absence in excess of thirty (30) continuous calendar days.
Effect of Absence. (Full-time) (Article 10.04 and Note 1 following Article 10.04 apply to full-time nurses only; Note 2 provides that the accrual of seniority and service on pregnancy and parental leave also applies to part-time nurses; Note 3 provides that the clause (including the notes) must be interpreted in a manner consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Employment Standards Act). If a nurse's absence without pay from the Hospital including absences under Article 11, Leaves of Absence, exceeds thirty (30) continuous calendar days the nurse will not accumulate seniority or service for any purposes under the Collective Agreement for the period of the absence in excess of thirty (30) continuous calendar days unless otherwise provided and the nurse will become responsible for full payment of any subsidized employee benefits in which she or he is entitled to participate during the period of absence. In the case of unpaid approved leaves of absence in excess of thirty (30) continuous calendar days a nurse may arrange with the Hospital to prepay the full premium of any applicable subsidized benefits during the period of leave in excess of thirty (30) continuous calendar days to ensure continuing coverage. In circumstances where a full-time nurse is on an unpaid leave of absence in excess of thirty (30) calendar days and voluntarily works occasional tour(s) during the leave period, the nurse shall be deemed to have continued on unpaid leave. Notwithstanding this provision, seniority shall accrue if a nurse's absence is due to disability resulting in W.S.I.B. benefits or L.T.D. benefits including the period of the disability program covered by Employment Insurance.
