Next, have your students explore and question the meaning of each colour on the map. Ask them about the type of map they see. What other kinds of maps are there? Can they find where they live? Explain to your students that this is a physical map of Canada that highlights the boreal forest and the different areas in the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement. The word “boreal” refers to a specific vegetation zone that covers parts of countries in northern latitudes such as Russia, Sweden and Canada. This map outlines the boreal forest in Canada. By looking at and reading the map and legend, ask students what can be found in the boreal region. Encourage them to think about animals, plants, people and places. Have one student place the Canadian flag on Canada’s capital city. Ask your class to divide themselves evenly throughout the provinces and territories. Place all provincial and territorial flags around the black and red border. Have students work in their provincial or territorial groups to determine which flag belongs to each province or territory and place the correct flag on its capital city.
