These include: Ozone Ultra Violet Rays Silver Bromine Iodine Chlorine In the disinfection of swimming pool water it has been found that chlorine is the most economical and most adaptable and it can be added either as a gas, a powder or in tablet form. Disinfection should not be confused with Sterilisation which is the killing of all micro-organisms.

Disposal of chlorinated water shall be performed in accordance with local, State, and federal regulations. If divers or remote operational vehicles are used, the divers and equipment shall be disinfected in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C652.
