Communication channel model Sample Clauses

Communication channel model. The IoT6 communication channel model is presented in Figure 16 and outlines three distinct network domains that are present within the architectural model. Figure 16: IoT6 communication channel model The first is the general Internet domain (Internet wide-area), which contains the future Internet core network and its associated components that access this network. This can be mobile networks, monitoring applications, cloud computing (SaaS), user interfaces and information systems. The second network domain covers the IoT intranet (IPv6 local network) containing the IPv6 Services, routers and Gateways used to provide access to sensor clusters. The third domain is the sensor network domain that contains the things with associated sensors connected using a variety of protocols (IPv6 or non-IPv6 based). Similar to the functional model, the communication channel model can be mapped to the communication channel model of IoT ARM (Figure 17). IPv6 and non-IPv6 sensor networks in IoT6 represent constrained networks, IPv6 local and future Internet core network of IoT6 represent Internet in ARM, while mapping of the Gateways is straightforward. Figure 17: IoT ARM communication channel model According to the IoT ARM, the use of Gateways is optional. While in general we can agree with such statement, our view is that the Gateways will be more often used than not. A more detailed view of the role and functionality of Gateways are given in Figure 18. Figure 18: IoT6 architecture with indicated Gateway functionality Within the local network (Intranet), all the local Gateways are IPv6-compliant and provide functionalities such as discovery of services and resources, protocol adapters (e.g. HTTP to CoAP, IPv4 to IPv6), smart routing and security and privacy aspects. Half Gateways provide more specific functionalities to the sensor networks in terms of protocols and addressing, taking into account IPv6 based as well as legacy devices (IPv4 and non-IP devices).
