This cut should not be made to create an unduly large open area, but should be cut far enough away from the main branch to leave the branch collar intact. To avoid splitting back the branch and tearing the bark, three cuts should be made: An undercut is made approximately a foot away from the limb junction. The limb is “stub cut.” The final cut is made at the crotch, leaving as small a wound as possible.  All branches shall be removed by the three cut method to avoid splitting or tearing of the bark. Where necessary, ropes or other equipment should be used to lower large branches or stubs to the ground.  All cuts shall be made as close as possible to the trunk or parent stem, without cutting into the branch collar or leaving a protruding stub. Bark at the edge of all pruning cuts should remain firmly attached.  When a branch is shortened to provide the required clearance, the remaining lateral should be large enough to assume the terminal role. The lateral should be at least 1/3 the diameter of the branch being removed.  Treatment of cuts and wounds with wound dressing or paints is not required.  Equipment that will damage the bark and cambium layer shall not be used on or in the tree. For example, the use of climbing spurs (hooks, irons) is not an acceptable Work practice for pruning operations on live trees. Sharp tools shall be used so that clean cuts will be made at all times.  All cut limbs shall be removed from the crown upon completion of the pruning.  To achieve bid objective for roadway and sidewalk clearances, large cuts or larger branch removal is preferable to multiple small cuts where possible.
