Canine Handlers. A Correctional Officer assigned to handle a canine used for law enforcement duties is required to and is responsible for the general care, grooming, and home kenneling of the canine.
Canine Handlers. The workweek for those members assigned as canine handlers shall consist of thirty - five (35) hours based upon five (5) consecutive seven (7) hour workdays and two (2) consecutive days off. Members will receive eight (8) hours of pay for each seven (7) hour day worked to compensate for the weekly off – duty care and maintenance of the animals in his/her custody. It is the intent of this provision to provide full compensation as required by the Fair Labor Standards Act to those members who are responsible for the weekly care, feeding, exercising, and boarding of a Township – Owned dog for all on – duty and off – duty hours worked so engaged. The following exceptions will apply:
Canine Handlers. The parties agree that a Deputy Sheriff assigned to handle a canine used for law enforcement duties is required to and is responsible for the general care, grooming and home kenneling of the canine, and that such activities are compensated as described below.
Canine Handlers. ‌ It is recognized that activities including exercising, training, grooming and care of canines is to be performed during normal duty time. In recognition that canine handlers may on occasion have to perform work-related duties in caring for their dogs while off-duty, the Municipality shall pay each canine handler an extra 30 minutes per day at time-and-one- half of the employee’s factored rate of pay to cover such activities, without regard to whether the canine handler is, in fact, performing the duties on a particular day. If a canine handler is required to spend any additional time in duty-related functions, he/she shall first, if not an emergency situation, receive prior approval from his/her supervisor. If an emergency requires such extra duty then the canine handler shall promptly report the extra time to his/her supervisor. Under any circumstance, any additional time worked over and above the 30 minutes per day shall be promptly reported on the employee's time card. It is the policy of the Department that dogs in the canine program will be kenneled at home.
Canine Handlers. An officer assigned to canine duties will be provided with time for training and exercise during the officer’s regularly scheduled shift. The officer will be compensated for six (6) hours per workweek for off-duty care including weekends, holidays, and leave days, provided the canine is in the officer’s care.
Canine Handlers. Canine Handlers will work a 4-10 schedule. The assigned working hours will be based on the needs of the Department and are subject to change, as determined by the Operations Division Commander. Handlers will not be required to be on call. In the event a Handler is contacted and requested for an emergency call out (as determined by the on-duty Watch Commander), normal call out compensation will apply. If, however, a Handler is placed on call, the Handler will be compensated according to the existing MOU. Canine training will occur on duty as follows:

Canine Handlers. 1. Canine handlers that provide for the off-duty care and maintenance of the canine will be paid an additional three and one half (3.5) hours of compensable time per week (.5 hours per day for care and maintenance of the canine).
Canine Handlers. Members who are assigned as a Canine Handler shall work eight (8) hour work days. Canine Handlers shall receive compensation of six (6) additional hours per pay period in recognition of home care and maintenance of their assigned working dogs, with said hours not to constitute overtime under the terms of this Agreement.
Canine Handlers. The Employer and the Union unequivocally agree that the intent of this section of the bargaining unit contract is to provide full compensation as required by the Fair Labor Standards Act of the United States Department of Labor to any employee(s) who are assigned or responsible for the weekly care, feeding, exercising, and boarding of an agency canine for all on-duty and any off-duty hours worked; and to provide for scheduling guidelines for the employee(s) so assigned or responsible. Further, it is the intention of this provision to outline the responsibilities of the employer and the canine handler(s). The employer agrees to provide the costs associated with the initial training of the canine handler and canine and any mandatory certification or recertification for the canine handler and/or canine. The Sheriff reserves the right to discontinue the canine program at any time at his/her sole discretion, to select, assign, and remove any canine handler from his/her assignment; and said selection, assignment, and/or removal may not be grieved or arbitrated by the employee or by the Fraternal Order of Police, Ohio Labor Council. The Employer and the Union agree that canine handlers shall have their hours of work adjusted throughout the fourteen (14) day work period to either report after the start of their assigned shift(s), or leave before the end of their regularly assigned shift(s), for a total of seven (7) hours per fourteen (14) day work period. This time will generally be scheduled to be taken in one-half hour or one-hour increments at the end of each affected employee’s eight (8) hour shift. If the Employer is unable to adjust the schedule to permit a canine handler to come in late or leave early from his or her shift, the affected employee(s) shall receive straight time pay compensation in lieu of the hours that were not able to be adjusted during the fourteen day work period. The Chief Deputy or his designee may schedule the canine handler(s) at the Chief Deputy’s discretion. The Employer and the Union agree that such compensation is meant to fully compensate canine handler(s) for their off-duty care of their assigned canine(s) including, but not limited to, bathing, brushing, exercising, feeding, grooming, cleaning of the canine’s kennel, cleaning and maintaining the canine handler’s assigned vehicle, and administering any medications or nutritional supplements to the canine.
