Bricks. Bricks shall uniform colour, thoroughly burnt but not over burnt, shall have plan rectangular faces with parallel sides and sharp right-angled edges. They should give ringing sound when struck. Brick shall not absorb more than 20% to 22% of water, when immersed in water for 24 hours. Bricks to be used shall be approved by the Independent Engineer.

Bricks for masonry work in foundations as well as in superstructure shall be first class burnt clay bricks conforming to PWD Specifications.

They shall not have any part under-burnt. They shall not break when thrown on the ground on their flat face in a sutured condition from a height of 60cm. o The size of brick shall be 230mm x 115mm x 75mm or near about. Only bricks of one standard size shall be used on one work unless specially permitted by the Employer/Architects. The following tolerance are permitted in the standard conventional size adopted on a particular work:  Lengths - Plus or Minus (about 3mm)  Breadth - Plus or Minus (about 1.5mm)  Depth - Plus or Minus (about 1.5mm) o After immersion in water, absorption by weight shall not exceed 20 percent of the dry weight of the brick when tested according to I.S. 1077. Unless otherwise specified the load to crush the brick when tested according to I.S. 1977 shall not be less than 75 kg/xx.xx. o The source, size and brand or the brick to be used for the entire work shall be approved by the Employer/Architects before hand from time to time.

Bricks. The bricks shall be 1st class bricks and of uniform size (9" x 4 1/2" x 3"). Alternatively bricks as per IS: 1077-1976, clause 5.1, the standard size of which is (19 cm x 9 cm x 9 cm), and which shall be table moulded from approved kilns of quality approved by the Engineer-in-charge, shall be used. It shall be well evenly burnt for getting brick which are sound, hard and with sharp edges and corners, and which shall give a ringing sound when struck with a metal. It shall be free from the grit and other impurities such as lime, iron and deleterious salts. No brick with 24 hours of immersion in water shall absorb more than 20% of its weight. Common buildings bricks shall have compressive strength of 50 Kg./Sq. Cms., unless otherwise specially permitted.
Bricks. Specifications of brickwork shall apply. Broken bricks shall not be used except for closing the line. The bricks shall be laid on edge.
