BEREAVEMENT AND COMPASSIONATE LEAVE. 2001 An employee who is, or will be absent on bereave- ment/compassionate leave shall notify her supervisor at the earliest possible opportunity. 2002 Bereavement leave of up to four (4) working days without loss of pay shall be granted in the event of the death of a spouse, live-in partner, child, step-child, parent, step-parent, sibling, step-sibling, father-in-law, mother-in-law, grandparent, grandparent-in-law, grandchild, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in- law, son-in-law, former legal guardian, fiancé and any other relative who resides in the same household. Unless other arrangements have been made, such days may be taken only in the period which extends from the date of notification of death up to and including the day following funeral proceedings. BEREAVEMENT AND COMPASSIONATE LEAVE a) (i) In the event of the death of a member of an employee’s immediate family, the employee will be granted a leave of absence with pay up to a maximum of five (5) working days. A member of an employee’s immediate family means a spouse, child, step-child, parent, partner of the same sex and brother or sister. Further unpaid leaves for an employee immediate family, up to a maximum of ninety (90) days when requested may be granted for bereavement. Such requests will not be unreasonably withheld by the Employer. The employee is responsible for giving the Employer two (2) weeks written notice of their intent to return to work.

Where the funeral is more than five hundred (500) kilometres from the employee’s work location, an employee may request additional time off without pay not exceeding two (2) working days. A supervisor will be notified in the event of a death in the family.
