Absences Without Pay. Any employee shall be allowed to be absent from duty without pay: 10(d)(1) During the course of any disability. 10(d)(2) During the course of any military leave, as provided in Section 17 of the Charter of the City of Los Angeles and the Military and Veterans Code of the State of California. 10(d)(3) To take advantage of any educational benefits of the State or Federal Government offered as a veteran of the Armed Forces. 10(d)(4) For special assignment to other governmental agencies and for other urgent or substantial personal reasons, provided that in the judgment of the General Manager, adequate arrangements can be made to take care of the employee’s duties without undue interference with the normal routine of work. 10(d)(5) For a period of up to four consecutive months following either the birth of a child or the placement in the employee’s home of an adopted child. This leave shall supplement pregnancy-related disability leave, if any. However, a family leave shall terminate no later than six months after the birth of a child or the placement in the home of an adopted child. Upon return from such leave, the employee shall be returned to the same classification and pay step occupied prior to taking the leave. This subsection shall be limited to natural parents, adoptive parents or legal guardians and shall apply only to annual rated full-time employees.

Absences Without Pay. Employees desiring an absence without pay from their employment shall secure written permission from the Board. Each request for an unpaid leave of absence will considered on its individual merits and granted or denied accordingly. The maximum absence without pay shall be for thirty (30) calendar days and may be extended for like periods. Permission for extension must be secured in writing from both the Association and the Board. Failure to comply with this provision shall result in the complete loss of seniority rights for the employee involved. An employee shall not accumulate sick leave or vacation allowances or seniority while on an absence without pay. It is understood that the provision of this Article may apply for a maximum of twelve (12) months in cases of a child care leave of absence.
