Absence without Salary. Staff members may apply for personal leave of absence without salary. Granting of such leave of absence is subject to operational requirements, but shall not be unreasonably denied. Applications for personal leave without pay shall be made in writing to the staff member’s Xxxx or Director through the normal administrative channels. Staff members shall receive a reply to their requests for unpaid leave within thirty (30) calendar days (except in unusual circumstances) of such application.

Absence without Salary. 10.01 A teacher may be granted a leave of absence for reasons of education, health, or a personal reason that the Board deems acceptable. The period of absence, if granted, will be determined by the Executive Officer, Human Resources Services, in view of the nature of the request. The teacher granted leave under this Article may participate in the Benefit Plans provided the full premium cost of participation (100%) is paid in advance by the teacher and on a payment schedule mutually agreed upon by the Board and the teacher.

Board Approved Leaves of Absence (LOA) Regular employees may request a leave of absence without pay for a specified period not to exceed one year per Arizona Revised Statute 15-512. Such leave will be granted only if it will not interrupt the educational process. A request for leave should be submitted to the supervisor with thirty (30) days notice, whenever possible. Leave of absence may be requested for, but not limited to the following: • Recovery from personal illness. (For the purpose of this policy, maternity will be considered personal illness.) • To care for a sick member of the immediate family. • For educational growth related to job assignment including work study and travel. • To join the Peace Corps, Vista, or National Teachers Corps; or to serve as an exchange or overseas teacher; or to accept a Fulbright or similar academic scholarship. • To serve in public office. Employees requesting a Board-Approved Leave of Absence for personal illness are required to use all available paid leave (including hours from the Sick Leave Bank) prior to an unpaid leave of absence. Employees may voluntary elect to use their accrued compensatory time. Employees may not request a leave of absence from one position to assume another position in the District. Accepting other employment while on leave of absence without the written permission of the Superintendent or his or her designee is considered a violation of the conditions of leave and will result in a recommendation for termination from District service. Upon receiving supervisory recommendation, the request is forwarded to the Executive Director of Human Capital for submission to the Superintendent for recommendation to the Governing Board.

A member may terminate leave and return to the University at the beginning of any academic year or at the beginning of the second (2nd) semester, if written notice of return is given to the Xxxx (or in the case of librarian members the University Librarian or Law Librarian, as appropriate) prior to the assignment of teaching responsibilities (or in the case of librarian members, workload assignments) for the semester in which they intend to return, or by mutual agreement.

However, the board may not refuse a leave without salary if it allows the use of the services of a professional on availability in accordance with clause The board may also grant a professional who has acquired his or her tenure under article a part-time leave of absence without salary for a specific period for reasons it deems valid; for example, it may allow another professional in the same employment group to increase the number of hours of his or her workweek, if the latter so agrees. The provisions of this article apply to the professional who benefits from such a leave by making the necessary changes.
