The way humans create and sustain systems of value and meaning using culture and symbolic language is a complex process with an extensive literature in both philosophy (e.g. Brennan et al. 2013, Sartre and De Beauvoir 1946) and psychology (e.g. Baumeister 2005), as well as other disciplines.
