Widow or widower means the surviving spouse of a ((fireman)) firefighter and shall include the surviving wife or husband of a ((fireman)) firefighter, retired on account of length of service, who was lawfully married to him or to her for a period of five years prior to the time of his or her retirement; and the surviving wife or husband of a ((fireman)) firefighter, retired on account of disability, who was lawfully married to him or her at and prior to the time he or she sustained the injury or contracted the illness resulting in his or her disability. The word shall not mean the divorced wife or husband of an active or retired ((fireman)) firefighter.
