Taper definition

Taper means a transitional area of decreasing or increasing pavement width to permit the formation or elimination of an auxiliary lane.
Taper means the widening of pavement to allow the redirection and transition of vehicles around or into an auxiliary lane. There are two different types of tapers. Redirect tapers necessary for the redirection of vehicles along the traveled way (table 4-9), and transition tapers for auxiliary lanes (table 4-6) that allow the turning vehicle to transition from or to the traveled way, to or from an auxiliary lane.
Taper. , which coincidentally means loser in Norwegian, was the word in 2013. This rarely used English word for a long thin candle is also used as a verb – in the sense of a slowdown or a cautious reduction (to taper off something). Its significance to the financial markets was anything but cautious. There was a real hullabaloo when the retiring Fed- eral Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke warned in early sum- mer that the central bank’s extensive bond buying would be scaled down as soon as the US economy was safely back on its feet. Naturally, gold and bonds dropped in value as a result of this, but also the prices of other assets such as equities dropped. This did seem a little strange, since the scale back was not to occur until the economy had clearly regained its health. However, the markets feared what the loss of USD 85 billion in liquidity monthly (USD 1 trillion annually) would mean.
