Basecoat means a coat of colored material, usually opaque, that is applied before graining inks, glazing coats, or other opaque finishing materials and is usually topcoated for protection.
Nuclear coating means any protective coating used to seal porous surfaces, such as steel or concrete, that otherwise would be subject to intrusion by radioactive materials. These coatings must be resistant to long term (service life) cumulative radiation exposure (ASTM D4082-83**), relatively easy to decontaminate (ASTM D4256-83**), and resistant to various chemicals to which the coatings are likely to be exposed (ASTM 3912-80**). Clear coating means a transparent coating designed to provide the final gloss and resistance properties of the coating system;
Specialty coating means any coating that is manufactured and used for one (1) of the following specialized applications:
Topcoat means a coating that is applied over a primer on an aerospace vehicle or component for appearance, identification, camouflage, or protection. Topcoats that are defined as specialty coatings are not included under this definition.
