Respirable crystalline silica definition

Respirable crystalline silica means quartz, cristobalite, and/or tridymite contained in airborne particles that are determined to be respirable by a sampling device designed to meet the characteristics for respirable- particle-size-selective samplers specified in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7708:1995: Air Quality―Particle Size Fraction Definitions for Health-Related Sampling.
Respirable crystalline silica means the mass fraction of inhaled crystalline silica particles penetrating to the unciliated airways. The respirable convention, which is a target specification for sampling instruments, is defined according to § 5.3. of European Standard EN 481 Workplace Atmospheres - Size fraction definition for measurement of airborne particles.
Respirable crystalline silica means quartz, cristobalite, and/or tridymite contained in airborne particles that are determined to be respirable by a sampling device designed to meet the characteristics for respirable-particle-size-selective samplers specified in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7708:1995: Air QualityParticle Size Fraction Definitions for Health-Related Sampling. The definition in the rule is very similar to the proposed definition with one modification. OSHA changed the wording from “means airborne particles that contain quartz, cristobalite, and/or tridymite and whose measurement is determined by a sampling device. . .” to “means quartz, cristobalite, and/or tridymite contained in airborne particles that are determined to be respirable by a sampling device. . .” to make it clear that only that portion of the particles that is composed of quartz, cristobalite, and/or tridymite is considered to be respirable crystalline silica.

Examples of Respirable crystalline silica in a sentence

  • Note: Respirable crystalline silica levels in some areas, such as sand towers or traps under the shakeout operations in foundries or areas where employees are performing abrasive blasting, may be so high that any exposure could reasonably be expected to be in excess of the PEL.

  • Respirable crystalline silica has been associated with the lung disease, Silicosis.• Unless adequately controlled, cutting, drilling or hammering of hardened/dry concrete can project particles at high velocity with consequent risk of impact damage and/or injury, particularly to exposed areas of the body and eyes.
