Pro tanto definition

Pro tanto. , as I understand it, means “as far as it goes” or “to that extent”. I contrast it with “on balance”. A pro tanto justification is a consideration in favor of a certain belief. If a certain belief is pro tanto justified by a perceptual experience it does not follow that the belief is justified on balance. A pro tanto justification may only justify the belief to a certain degree. Epistemologists have shown sensitivity to this distinction (e.g. Audi 2001; Pritchard 2004). Those sensitive to the distinction, however, have not marked it. Its significance should not be overlooked.11
