Patah hati definition

Patah hati is an idiom that means disappointed that someone’s expectations failed (Salamadian). This Indonesian idiom is translated into “broken heart” which is belong English idiom that refers to a romantic loss or breaks up. The idioms in both languages share also share equivalent lexical units in terms of forms. In English “broken heart” is a noun phrase and in Bahasa Indonesia di “patah hati” is also a noun phrase. So, it is clear that “patah hati” and “broken heart” are idioms that are lexically and semantically equal. In addition, these two idioms above were used by Ikal to express his sadness over his lover A Ling left him behind in Belitong (p.221-222).
