National Highway System definition

National Highway System. ’ means the Fed- eral-aid highway system described in section 103(b).
National Highway System means the network designated by the federal highway administration in consultation with the state department of transportation, which consists of interconnected urban and rural principal arterials and highways that serve major population centers, ports, airports, public transportation facilities, other intermodal transportation facilities, and other major travel destinations; meet national defense requirements; and serve interstate and interregional travel.
