life-threatening disease definition

life-threatening disease means any disease/illness that reduces the life expectancy of the employee such as cancer, heart disease, TB, HIV infection or other vital organ disease. If any provision confers any right or imposes any obligation on any party, then notwithstanding that it is only in the interpretation paragraph, effect must be given to it as if it were a substantive provision. Application This Life-Threatening Diseases Policy applies to all employees of the University. Policy In keeping with the spirit of the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (Chapter 2: Bill of Rights, Section 14: Privacy), and in terms of the specific provisions of the Employment Equity Act (55 of 1998: Section 5(4)), no (prospective) employee is compelled to disclose a life-threatening disease that the (prospective) employee may have. The University undertakes to deal with all cases of life-threatening disease in terms of the law and in terms of fair practice. The University considers it desirable that employees or prospective employees who are HIV positive or have other life-threatening diseases should notify the Executive Director: Human Resources of this. If notified by employees, the University will deal with the information in the strictest confidence, and will only disclose it to other persons who are directly involved if it is in the interests of the employees concerned or the University, and then only with the prior written consent of the employees who made the disclosure. Any employee who reveals the HIV/AIDS or life-threatening disease status of a fellow employee without prior written consent of the respective employee will expose him/herself to severe disciplinary action. The University will take all reasonable precautionary measures to ensure the occupational health and safety of all employees.

Related to life-threatening disease

  • Life-threatening means that the subject was at immediate risk of death from the AE as it occurred or it is suspected that use or continued use of the product would result in the subject’s death. ‘Life-threatening’ does not mean that had an AE occurred in a more severe form it might have caused death (eg, hepatitis that resolved without hepatic failure).

  • Life-threatening condition means any disease or condition from which the likelihood of death is probable unless the course of the disease or condition is interrupted.

  • Intimidating, threatening, abusive, or harming conduct means, but is not limited to, conduct that does the following:

  • Threatening behavior means any pattern of behavior or isolated action, whether or not it is directed at another person, that a reasonable person would believe indicates potential for future harm to students, school personnel, or school property.

  • Credible threat means a verbal or nonverbal threat, or a combination of the two, including threats delivered by electronic communication or implied by a pattern of conduct, which places the person who is the target of the threat in reasonable fear for his or her safety or the safety of his or her family members or individuals closely associated with the person, and which is made with the apparent ability to carry out the threat to cause such harm. It is not necessary to prove that the person making the threat had the intent to actually carry out the threat. The present incarceration of the person making the threat is not a bar to prosecution under this section.

  • Chemical dependency means the physiological and psychological addiction to a controlled drug or substance, or to alcohol. Dependence upon tobacco, nicotine, caffeine or eating disorders are not included in this definition.

  • Insured Environmental Event As defined in Section 3.07(d).

  • Health status-related factor means any of the following factors:

  • Occupational disease means a disease contracted in the course of employment, which by its causes and the characteristics of its manifestation or the condition of the employment results in a hazard which distinguishes the employment in character from employment generally, and the employment creates a risk of contracting the disease in greater degree and in a different manner from the public in general.

  • Inherited Metabolic Disorder means a disease caused by an inherited abnormality of body chemistry that meets all of the following requirements:

  • inherited metabolic disease means a disease caused by an inherited abnormality of body chemistry for which testing is mandated by law;

  • Attack directed against any civilian population means a course of conduct involving the multiple commission of acts referred to in paragraph 1 against any civilian population, pursuant to or in furtherance of a State or organizational policy to commit such attack;

  • Co-occurring disorder (COD) means any combination of mental health symptoms and substance use disorder symptoms or diagnoses that affect a consumer and are typically determined by the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

  • Serious health condition means an illness, injury, impairment, or physical or mental condition that involves:

  • Designated chemical dependency specialist means a person

  • Life-sustaining treatment means treatment that, based on reasonable medical judgment, sustains the life of a patient and without which the patient will die. The term includes both life-sustaining medications and artificial life support such as mechanical breathing machines, kidney dialysis treatment, and artificially administered nutrition and hydration. The term does not include the administration of pain management medication, the performance of a medical procedure necessary to provide comfort care, or any other medical care provided to alleviate a patient's pain.

  • Medical event means an event that meets the criteria in 12VAC5-481-2080.

  • Behavioral violation means a student’s behavior that violates the district’s discipline policies.

  • Family violence means conduct as defined by S.7 of the Family Violence Act 2004.

  • Pivotal Clinical Trial means, with respect to a Licensed Product, (a) a phase 3 Clinical Trial or (b) any other clinical trial that is intended (as of the time the study is initiated) to obtain the results and data to support (without the need to conduct any additional clinical trial) the filing of an application for Regulatory Approval for such product.

  • Potential Material Event means any of the following: (i) the possession by the Company of material information not ripe for disclosure in the Registration Statement, which shall be evidenced by determinations in good faith by the Board of Directors of the Company that disclosure of such information in the Registration Statement would be detrimental to the business and affairs of the Company, or (ii) any material engagement or activity by the Company which would, in the good faith determination of the Board of Directors of the Company, be adversely affected by disclosure in the Registration Statement at such time, which determination shall be accompanied by a good faith determination by the Board of Directors of the Company that the Registration Statement would be materially misleading absent the inclusion of such information.

  • sickle cell disease means a hemolytic disorder characterized by chronic anemia, painful events, and various complications due to associated tissue and organ damage; "hemolytic" refers to the destruction of the cell membrane of red blood cells resulting in the release of hemoglobin.

  • Adult abuse means the willful infliction of physical pain, injury or mental anguish or unreasonable

  • Training Event means either a Course or Online Training, or both.

  • Most serious offense means any of the following felonies

  • Expected week of childbirth means the week, starting on a Sunday, during which the mother's doctor or midwife expects her to give birth.
