Kosei literally means “personal quality/character.” This is not a phrase coined by the mothers themselves, but it originates from the earlier disability rights movement in 1970s, when “Aoi shiba no kai” (Green Grass Organization), a socializing group for people with cerebral palsy, came up with the slogan as a means to promote self-empowerment and disability pride (Brown 2006; Mori 1999).
