In vain definition

In vain means ‘without necessity’ or ‘without due respect’.
In vain means, "without purpose, without just cause." It would be totally without purpose for an unbeliever to suffer as a Christian. There is no merit in an unsaved man's works as far as salvation is concerned and the same is true of sufferings. If we suffer as Christians, we will be rewarded for it at the Judgment Seat of Christ. But the unsaved will suffer in hell without a reward.
