Formalization definition

Formalization means a process of recording and recognizing land rights that receives some degree of official sanction. Formalization covers a continuum of activities. Community-led projects to map property rights may be sanctioned by a government through a certification of group-use rights. More individualized rights may be recognized through the use of paralegal titling. Importantly, formalization does not equate to systematic titling of individualized property rights. Rather, this is one option along the continuum. The appropriate level of formalization depends upon the unique circumstances that exist in a particular environment.
