Epiphenomenon definition

Epiphenomenon means “the mental conceived as a mere accompanying phenomenon of matter”. According to O. Houdé et al., éds., Vocabulaire de sciences cognitives, Paris, 1998, 161s., ‘epiphenomenism’ means the theory that states that “mental events do not exert any necessary influence and are therefore only ‘epiphenomena’ with respect to the physical events that cause them.
