Decommissioning definition

Decommissioning means the measures taken at the end of a facility's operating life to assure the continued protection of the public from any residual radioactivity or other potential hazards present at a facility.
Decommissioning means administrative and technical measures which allow the removal of some or all of the regulatory controls from a nuclear facility and which aim at ensuring the long term protection of the public and the environment, including the reduction of the levels of residual radionuclides in the materials and on the site of the facility.
Decommissioning means conducting final operational activities at a nuclear facility to dismantle site structures, to decon- taminate site surfaces and remaining structures, to stabilize and contain residual radioactive material and to carry out any other activities necessary to prepare the site for postoperational care.
