Community Service Activity definition

Community Service Activity means a community service that is undertaken on a pro bono basis for charity, community or public purpose by staff members in their capacity as University employees where such activities generate minimal or no income to the University or individual staff members and as such will not attract the goods and services tax. Where the provision of any services attracts GST, the activity concerned is a University Consultancy. Typical examples of Community Service Activities might include: series of lectures and tutorials for a not-for-profit community organisation; strategic planning for community groups; design of a community attitudes survey for, say, a local branch of a Lions Club; commissioned creative works, performances or professional advice rendered to a community group or agency such as a Town or City Council and some unpaid not-for-profit company directorships. Activities undertaken for similar purposes or entities, which generate significant income, are governed by the conditions applying to University and Private consultancies. Activities generally regarded as part of normal scholarly activity and which do not attract receipt of a significant royalty (eg. examination of theses, assessment of staff classification or promotion, attending meetings, writing or publishing conventional scholarly works in the staff member’s field of expertise, such as books, chapters, articles, reviews and editing) are not regarded as Community Service Activities. Activities such as staff members serving on the Board of a Government agency or Not-for profit organisation or equivalent are considered as a community service, but need the approval of the Executive Dean. With a Community Service Activity staff are covered by Workers' Compensation and University Insurance policies if the person delegated responsibility has approved the staff member’s participation.
