Achievement versus ascription definition
Achievement versus ascription dimension describes means by which people gain social status. The social position is either ascribed based on age, gender, origin or wealth, or the position is achieved by success. The value of the status is determined by what individuals do and the success they gain. Trompenaars states two examples to differentiate this two cultures. In an achievement oriented culture people will ask ‘what did you study?’ whereas in an ascription oriented culture people will rather ask you ‘where did you study?’ (Trompenaars, Hampden-‐Turner, 1997).
