Opinion 2Inter-Tribal Agreement • August 15th, 2019
Contract Type FiledAugust 15th, 2019The Suquamish Tribe has objected to the ramp, claiming it would hamper their Treaty Rights to harvest by causing unsafe conditions. Be aware there is an Inter-Tribal agreement (that does not involve the WDFW) where the tribes have agreed to NOT net salmon in Marine Area 9, where the Point No Point ramp is located. Area 9 is an intersection point for salmon migrating in from the ocean. Fish come in from the Straight and arrive in Area 9, then diverge either to the SW to Hood Canal, round Possession Bar and head north for the “S” rivers (Sauk, Skagit, Stillaguamish, Skykomish, Snohomish), or they turn SE and swim towards South Puget Sound. The Inter-Tribal agreement eliminates intense netting competition at this intersecting Area 9 point, and the salmon are harvested by the tribes closer to their “terminal points” nearer their original spawning locations.
