Statement of Principles. Research is undertaken to create new knowledge, to stimulate a spirit of inquiry, to solve problems, and to educate students. Adequate recognition of and incentive to potential inventors through the sharing of the financial benefits resulting from the transfer and development of patentable inventions and other marketable forms of intellectual property encourages the creation of such intellectual property and serves the public interest. The research and teaching missions of the University always take precedence over patent considerations. While the University recognizes the benefits of patent development, it is most important that the direction of University research not be established or unduly influenced by patent considerations or personal financial interests.
