Statement of Joint Objectives. A. STATEMENT OF NEED The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) and State accountability interests require increasingly detailed data and analyses for education decision-making. Meeting these requirements may pose challenges to States, because they may not have the student-level data needed to meet reporting and analytical requirements efficiently. Additionally, States, and the districts that provide them with data, have limited staff resources to address multiple, often simultaneous requests for data from Federal, State, and other customers. Finally, States and districts often lack the technology that can support the varied information and analytic needs of their stakeholders. Longitudinal data systems provide the necessary basis for States and LEAs to efficiently and accurately meet these growing needs, and this grant program is designed to assist States in developing and utilizing the data systems required for the task.

Statement of Joint Objectives. A. STATEMENT OF NEED The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) and State accountability interests require increasingly detailed data and analyses for education decision-making. Satisfying these requirements poses challenges to States, because the content and structure of their student-level data systems are inadequate for efficiently and accurately meeting reporting, analytical, or decision- support needs. Additionally, States, and the local education agencies (LEAs) that provide them with data, have limited staff resources and often lack the technology needed to support the diverse information needs of their stakeholders. Longitudinal data systems provide the necessary basis for States and LEAs to efficiently and accurately meet these growing needs, and this grant program is designed to assist States in developing and utilizing the data systems required for the task.
