Retransmission. Retransmission is used on packet-based systems to protect against short-term disturbances to the packet flow. Mechanisms in protocols such as TCP enable the receiver at the end of a circuit to recognise that not all transmitted packets have been received, and to request retransmission of those missing. Clearly this process takes a variable amount of time, and therefore an end to end system designed to carry live-to-air broadcast signals needs to incorporate a ‘de-jitter buffer’ in the receive device to ensure the signal flow to the downstream system runs smoothly. The size of this buffer needs to be chosen carefully. A big buffer means a lot of retransmission can occur, but it also means the end-to-end latency of the system will be high.
