Reporting Sick Leave. In order for unit members to receive sick leave compensation, the procedures below will be followed: The unit member must notify the immediate supervisor or designee at the work location of his/her absence within the first hour of work of the first day of absence unless conditions make notification impossible. The unit member who has been absent five days or more and who has been notified that a substitute has been hired shall, at least one day prior to his/her expected return to work, notify his/her supervisor so that the employment of any substitute unit member may be terminated. If the unit member fails to notify his/her supervisor and both the unit member and the substitute report, the substitute is entitled to the assignment, and the unit member shall not receive pay for that day. An unit member absent for three (3) working days or more may be required to present a physician's statement stating the nature of the illness or injury and the date the unit member is able to return to work. The District will require verification of all absences if there is reason to know or suspect abuse of the personal illness and injury leave by a unit member. Any such request for verification shall be preceded by a written explanation and warning from the District that the unit member will be required to provide such certificate prior to any further sick leave usage.
