Weakness, injury, confusion, or restrictions on activities or positions may prevent persons from feeding themselves. • Position your chair to face the person and engage them in pleasant conversation. • If needed, cut food into small pieces, butter bread. • Make sure napkin and utensils are within easy reach. • Stay with the person for the meal, encouraging food and fluid intake. Offer and provide assistance as needed, while encouraging patients to feed themselves as much as possible. • Keep the person focused on the task of eating by verbal reminders and the use of touch. Do not ask questions that require a response or cause laughter while swallowing, due to risk of choking. • Dehydration in older persons is a common problem.
