Professional and Education Leave. Nurses may be granted leave(s) of absence with or without pay to attend workshops, seminars and short courses, which may be deemed beneficial to the nurse’s professional development especially as it relates to her responsibilities. Selection shall be made from nurses who make application to attend. Such leave is granted at the discretion of the Employer. The granting of such leave shall not be arbitrary and will not be unreasonably denied.

A Nurse shall be entitled to leave of absence from their regularly scheduled working hours for the purpose of writing exams arising out of the Quality Assurance Program required by the College of Nurses of Ontario. The Employer shall pay 2 hours at the Nurse’s straight time hourly rate to write the exam. A Nurse elected to the College of Nurses will suffer no loss of pay for time spent in attendance at regularly scheduled meetings of the College of Nurses, where the Nurse would otherwise be working for the Employer.

Such leave is granted at the discretion of the Employer. The Employer will endeavour to grant such approved leaves as equitably as possible from amongst the bargaining unit members who apply. The nurse will promptly notify the Employer upon notification that she will be required to attend, repays the amount (other than expenses) paid to her for such service or attendance to the Employer and presents proof of service requiring her attendance.

Compassionate leave without loss of salary up to a maximum of three (3) working days may be allowed at the discretion of the Nursing Supervisor for critical illness in the nurse's family.

A nurse shall be entitled to an unpaid leave of absence from her regularly scheduled working hours for the purpose of writing any formal examinations (including mid-terms) in any courses in which the nurse is enrolled to upgrade her nursing qualifications. The nurse shall provide her supervisor with fourteen calendar days notice of the date and time of any such examinations.
Professional and Education Leave. Where a nurse is required by the Employer to attend any training program, course or workshop (including any program, course or workshop for the purpose of education, skill or career development or upgrading), or it is recommended by the Employer that a nurse attend such training program, course or workshop, the Employer agrees to pay any applicable fee and to compensate such nurse for the time off from work as a result of attending the training program, course or workshop.
