Common use of Preliminary Steps Clause in Contracts

Preliminary Steps. 1. An employee having a grievance will first attempt to resolve it informally with his immediate supervisor at the time the incident giving rise to the grievance occurs. At this step, there is no reason to put the grievance in writing, no report needs to be submitted by the supervisor (unless the City requires that such a report be made for its own use) and no Union representative need be present. 2. If the employee is not satisfied with the response from his immediate supervisor, he shall present the grievance in writing to the Grievance Committee within ten (10) calendar days of the event or circumstances giving rise to the grievance, as per Section 9.6.
