Polystyrene. Impact grades of polystyrene (PS) that have been copolymerized with minor amounts of butadiene are injection or blow moulded into trays or cases for medical products. PS is also formed into rigid medical devices, such as drainage monitoring units, shown in Fig. Because of its cyclic backbone, PS neither cross-links nor degrades when exposed to sterilizing radiation. Care, however, must be taken not to overexpose this resin since some yellowing could result.
