Parent Engagement. Columbus Collegiate is deeply accountable to the students it serves because their parents make the ultimate act of faith: to bring their children to our doors and trust our school to deliver an outstanding education and fulfill our school mission. Close communication with our parents is essential. Together, we enter into a three-way partnership between parents, students, and our school to ensure a successful academic future for each child. To ensure the voice of these parents is well heard, Columbus Collegiate has created a Parents as Partners group with unlimited seats for membership. The chair and vice-chair are elected or chosen for one-year terms. If desired by the group at large, parents will be elected to the Parents as Partners chair position by a vote of parents whose students are currently enrolled in the school. This group supports the mission of Columbus Collegiate Academy by: • Coordinating parent volunteer efforts to support student recruitment, enrichment classes, and community gatherings; • Gathering and reporting data about parent satisfaction; • Reporting to the school director regarding their findings; • Ensuring that school communications are sufficiently accessible to Spanish-speaking parents; • Planning parent events that support the academic mission of the school, such as high school achievement nights, community service events, student academic performance nights, and parenting seminars to support academic achievement. In addition to this parent group, the school administration will establish frequent, formal communication with parents to support the school mission. Families will be welcomed to the school through an orientation that will review school policies in detail, celebrate student learning, and include the signing of parent-student-school contracts. Parents will attend conferences at the school two times annually, at which time assessment results and report cards will be reviewed in detail. Progress reports requiring parent signature will be sent home at regular intervals between these conferences. Teachers will call the parents of their homeroom students on a regular basis to both report positive academic results and behaviors and deliver clear feedback when expectations are not met. A monthly school newsletter will communicate the effectiveness of the program and the excitement of the school to members of the community.
Parent Engagement. Encouraging Family Involvement and Communication The on-going support and participation of each student’s parent(s) or guardian in the educational process is fundamental to the mission of KIPP Journey Academy. We believe that to the greatest extent possible, all members of the school and family should form a team dedicated to educating the child. All parents and families will sign KIPP Commitment to Excellence, which outlines the parent’s basic responsibilities for ensuring that students arrive to school on time and that assigned homework is checked on a daily basis. During this visit, parents, children and the school administration will discuss the school’s academic and behavioral expectations and sign the Commitment to Excellence Form (please see uploaded attachment for sample commitment form), which outlines our school’s expectations for involvement by all parties involved in the student’s education. During this meeting, staff will explain the format of the assessments that parents will regularly be required to sign, and exchange contact information to determine the most effective way of updating parents on their student’s academic progress. There are a variety of structures that KIPP Journey Academy puts in place to promote family involvement and increased communication throughout the school year. They include but are not limited to: - Weekly Family Newsletters - Parent conferences scheduled three times annually - Monthly KIPP Connect After-School Newsletter - Daily automatic call notification system to inform parents of missed work - Monthly after school community events (festivals, choir performances) - Annual Pancake Breakfast - “The Village” -- Monthly PTA meetings - Staff contact lists with cell phones provided to all families annually; families can contact teachers until 9pm each night Gauging Parent Satisfaction To gauge parent satisfaction with the school climate and culture, we provide families a monthly forum to discuss ideas, issues, and new initiatives for the school at “The Village” PTA meetings. Additionally, the entire KIPP network issues a survey annually of parents called the Healthy Schools Survey. This survey gauges the overall parent satisfaction with the program, school discipline, parent engagement and communication, and school safety amongst other criteria. The results of this survey are shared within the KIPP network to provide a national benchmark for success and areas for continued focus.
Parent Engagement. The Board of Education recognizes and values parents and families as children’s first teachers and decision makers in education. The board believes that student learning is more likely to occur when there is an effective partnership between the school and the student’s parents and family. Such a partnership between the home and school and greater involvement of parents in the education of their children generally result in higher academic achievement, improved student behavior, and reduced absenteeism. In accordance with statute and the State Board of Education Parent and Family Involvement Policy, use of the term “families” is used in order to include children’s primary caregivers, who may not be their biological parents, such as xxxxxx caregivers, grandparents, and other family members. In cultivating partnerships with families and communities, the board is committed to the following:
Parent Engagement. Charter School shall not require a parent or legal guardian of a prospective or enrolled student to perform volunteer service hours, or make payment of fees or other monies, goods, or services in lieu of performing volunteer service, as a condition of his/her child’s admission, continued enrollment, attendance, or participation in the school’s educational activities, or otherwise discriminate against a student in any manner because his/her parent cannot, has not, or will not provide volunteer service to Charter School.
Parent Engagement. The School works to involve families in their child’s school and education from the outset. For families new to the School, they can expect communication and invitations to participate in numerous events. These include recruitment events, open houses, Welcome to IDEA events, registration, summer engagement events, New Family and Student Orientation, and Back to School / Meet the Teacher events. These events are geared toward helping families transition into IDEA. Events emphasize IDEA’s academic model, culture, and the partnership between home and school. IDEA works to ensure that every family is onboarded, meaning they attend registration and a Welcome to IDEA session. While this event is highly recommended, it is not required of parents or students – children are not denied their seat, nor are offers rescinded, due to lack of attendance. Once students are enrolled at the School, distribution of information is paramount. IPS staff believe that it is crucial for students to have families who are well informed and engaged. IPS accomplishes this through several avenues, ensuring that staff can share information in a way that reaches the families Additional events are held on campus throughout the year to encourage parents and families to interact with campus leadership, including report-card pick-up night, parent walk-throughs, and volunteer programs. The School may also offer town-hall meetings throughout the year to get feedback from parents and families. In terms of active engagement in student learning, parents are asked to participate in several ways, if they are able. Parents are asked to support the daily and summer reading of younger students. They are also asked to check homework completion. Students typically receive a notebook where they write down their assignments and their accomplishments; parents are asked to sign this regularly, ensuring that students have shared their progress and are also being held accountable at home for homework and daily reading. Every parent has access to student learning data via an online portal, and direct communication is often conducted via cell phone, either through an app, text message, or a call. The principal may require teachers to send a certain number of messages to parents daily or weekly, with an emphasis on sharing student progress and success.
