Open Shifts Clause Samples

The "Open Shifts" clause defines the procedures and conditions under which available work shifts that are not assigned to specific employees can be filled. Typically, this clause outlines how employees may be notified of open shifts, the process for expressing interest or claiming a shift, and any priority rules, such as seniority or qualifications, that determine who is eligible to take the shift. Its core practical function is to ensure that staffing gaps are filled efficiently while providing a fair and transparent method for employees to access additional work opportunities.
Open Shifts. Each department will have a policy for signing up for and distributing opportunities for extra work. Any change in departmental policy will be communicated to staff prior to implementation.
Open Shifts. When shifts are known in advance, the Employer shall post a list of open shifts as soon as they become available, but no later than seven (7) days in advance of the open shift with space for Bargaining Unit employees to sign up for those shifts. More than one employee may sign up for the same shift. Available shifts will then be distributed among Bargaining Unit Employees who have signed up in rotating seniority order, first to employees who would not receive Overtime, then to employees for whom the additional shift will not trigger Consecutive Shift Premium, then to any qualified Bargaining Unit employee.
Open Shifts. Additional shifts will first be offered to regular full-time and part-time nurses assigned in that Department who can work the shift on a straight-time basis, and then to per diem nurses. Prior to offering additional shifts to regular FTE nurses, the Employer may preschedule each per diem nurse for up to two (2) shifts per schedule.

Open Shifts. In the event that shifts are still open after all operators have been assigned, the Company will accept volunteer operators to cover the open shifts, if insufficient volunteers are available, the Company will then assign work to cover open shifts beginning with reverse order of seniority. No assignment will result in a driver returning to work earlier than 8 hours, nor will it violate the 10 hours of behind the wheel time in a workday.
Open Shifts. The Hospital will give preference (by attempting to offer an open shift) to a status RN to work up to full time before using per diem and Registry RNs for available work, provided the status nurse gives sufficient notice of her/his availability to work that open shift. An open shift is a shift that is unfilled before the final schedule is posted. A reasonable effort will be made to identify such open shifts before the final schedule is posted. These shifts will not be at a premium rate.
Open Shifts. A. The monthly filling of open shifts process procedure will be identified in Appendix A Filling Open Shifts. B. In the case of open shifts not covered in the procedure above; shifts shall be paged out with a thirty (30) minute window and awarded in order of: 1. Regular Part-Time employees under forty (40) hours; 2. Full-Time employees; 3. Regular Part-Time employees over forty (40) hours; then 4. Any shifts not awarded within the thirty (30) minutes shall be awarded to any qualified Employee willing to work. Supervisors, Clincal educators shall only be allowed to work in bargaining unit positions during emergency conditions, in a County EMS Ambulance Query (e.g., Levels 3, 2, 1 or 0), when necessary to avoid shutting down a field unit, and to avoid, at the Employer’s option, mandating an employee to work an open assignment after exhausting the procedure identified in Appendix A/Article 10 (Filling Open Shifts) of this Agreement. In the case of a leave of absence or other prolonged absence by a full-time employee, the Employer shall have the right, should it wish to do so, to put the resulting open shifts up for bid to a regular part time employee for a period of time not to exceed the current bid. In the event the Employer wishes to continue such open shift into the next bid cycle, the Employer shall place such open shift up for bid on the next shift bid.
Open Shifts. All open shifts will be available to full-time bargaining unit employees on a first come, first served basis year round, provided the Supervisor is able to fill the resulting vacancy with another employee. Open shift selection will be subject to service requirements in a manner that would not reduce the ACP complement below a minimum of 4 ACP ambulances plus the ACP first response unit on the day shifts (shifts starting between 0500 hours and 1459 hours) and 3 ACP ambulances plus the ACP first response unit on the night shifts (shifts starting between 1500 hours and 0459 hours). The Region will make every reasonable effort to find any available employee to fill the open shift. In any case, no employee will abandon their shift with less than twenty-four (24) hours notice from the start of their shift. Open shifts for the current month will remain available on “Electronic scheduler” for five (5) calendar days of the posting, or until ten (10) calendar days remain before the open shift is to occur. All requests that result in an open shift shall be posted to “Electronic scheduler” within twenty four (24) hours from the time of receipt and will be posted for the three (3) month scheduling period referred to in 17.04 d). Each employee is allowed three (3) open shift changes from their original shift inclusive. Open shift requests for the upcoming month will not be addressed during the part-time scheduling period (first seven (7) calendar days of the month) preceding the month being scheduled). Open shift requests for this month will continue to be processed after release of the schedule.
Open Shifts. An open shift is a shift that is unfilled before the final schedule is posted. In order for an employee to be considered for an open shift, the employee must designate, in writing, the days of the week and shifts for which they are available to work and provide the document to the Department Manager. The District will initially attempt to schedule qualified per diems employees to fill open shifts by, unless required otherwise, giving preference to scheduling such open shifts to qualified per diem employees in seniority order. In the event the District is unable to fill such open shifts with qualified per diem employees, the District will give preference to scheduling open shifts to qualified employees by classification seniority in the following order: 1. Regular full-time employees who have been canceled due to Low Census Days. 2. Regular part-time employees who have been canceled due to low census days. 3. Regular part-time employees. The above preference order will not result in bumping employees out of work for which they are normally scheduled nor will it result in any employee being scheduled to work overtime. If the shift remains unfilled and overtime will be incurred, the District will give preference to scheduling open shifts to qualified employees by classification seniority in the following order: 1. Regular full-time employees. 2. Regular part-time employees.
Open Shifts. Employees may sign up for posted open shifts following the seniority process for seven (7) working days after the schedule is posted. When assigning open shifts the following sequence shall be utilized: a. Regular full-time and regular part-time employees; b. Part-time employees; c. Per-diem employees; d. On-call employees; The above sequence shall be applied in the following order based upon the job classification and department of the individuals signing up for the open shifts: 1. Same job classification, same department, on straight time (by department seniority); 2. Same job classification, different department, on straight time (by bargaining unit seniority); 3. Different job classification, same department, on straight time (by department seniority); 4. Different job classification, different department, on straight time (by bargaining unit seniority); 5. Same job classification, same department, on overtime (by department seniority); 6. Same job classification, different department, on overtime (by bargaining unit seniority); 7. Different job classification, same department, on overtime (by department seniority); 8. Different job classification, different department, on overtime (by bargaining unit seniority). After seven (7) calendar days the revised schedule shall be posted either electronically or by paper copies. Staff members awarded shifts shall be made aware of the awarded shifts by accessing the intranet or Oakwood’s email system in those departments that have posted the schedules through intranet or Oakwood’s email system, or by paper copies in those departments that don’t. Any remaining open shifts shall be filled on a first-come, first-served basis with contact to on-call and per diem staff members notifying them of the open shifts. Employee preferences for the mode of contact will be taken into consideration. The above provisions do not apply to Short Notice Open Shifts (Call-ins). For Short Notice Open Shifts (Call-ins), the Employer shall award the open shift on a volunteer basis first to employees on straight time by department seniority and, thereafter, on a volunteer basis to employees who would incur overtime by department seniority.
